More than 1000 distributed ledger technology (DLT) systems raising 600billionininvestmentin2016featuretheunprecedentedanddisruptivepotentialofblockchaintechnology.Asystematicanddata−drivenanalysis,comparisonandrigorousevaluationofthedifferentdesignchoicesofdistributedledgersandtheirimplicationsisachallenge.Therapidlyevolvingnatureoftheblockchainlandscapehindersreachingacommonunderstandingofthetechno−socio−economicdesignspaceofdistributedledgersandthecryptoeconomiestheysupport.Tofillthisgap,thispapermakesthefollowingcontributions:(i)AconceptualarchitectureofDLTsystemswithwhich(ii)ataxonomyisdesignedand(iii)arigorousclassificationofDLTsystemsismadeusingreal−worlddataandwisdomofthecrowd.(iv)ADLTdesignguidelineistheendresultofapplyingmachinelearningmethodologiesontheclassificationdata.Comparedtorelatedworkandasdefinedinearliertaxonomytheory,theproposedtaxonomyishighlycomprehensive,robust,explanatoryandextensible.ThefindingsofthispapercanprovidenewinsightsandbetterunderstandingofthekeydesignchoicesevolvingthemodelingcomplexityofDLTsystems,whileidentifyingopportunitiesfornewresearchcontributionsandbusinessinnovation.
